I believe there is a rort in the repair industry that luckily the internet may help you avoid.

The message 'Unable to Print' (followed by a two-digit code) will appear on your display if your machine has had a mechanical malfunction or if a foreign object, such as a paper clip or paper scrap, is stuck inside your machine. Check for foreign objects inside the machine. Lift the scanner cover using the plastic tabs located on the left and right side of the machine until it locks securely into the open position. Go to Start, settings, printers. Right click on the printer, properties, print test page. If that doesn't work there should be a head cleaning option in properties that will make it clean the print.

As an example, before the internet I contacted Canon with a video camera where video was now only being recorded in black and white. Another family member’s identical video camera did the same a few months earlier. Given two identical video cameras behaving the same, I have no doubt it should have been easy to let me know what the most likely problem was and an estimate in cost. That way I could quickly make a good decision on how I should proceed. That was decades ago and companies are still doing the same.

A home based client of mine called Brother because their MFC990CW was displaying the error Unable to print 4F. They were given two numbers and told to contact the companies for service. One company told them it would cost $60 to look at the printer. They called another company who told them it wasn’t worth fixing and they could get a new J470 for $149. The first company would know the most likely reason for the issue but by not providing any guidance (which to me Brother should provide) they may get the person to come in and spend $60. This same technique has been going on in the repair industry for decades.

The second company most likely provided good advice and a suitable model number, but being a service centre their prices are unlikely to be competitive.

The client called me and I said I’d check the printer out and if I couldn’t fix it there would be no charge. They’re local so just a couple of minutes up the road. I checked the printer and based on the error message and information on the internet, the most likely reason for the error is the print head. A quick check showed the MFC-J470DW was available for $99 from a number of nearby retailers.

I suggested to the client the best approach was to go to the local retailer and purchase the new all-in-one unit. By taking the printer in for service they’d be spending a minimum of $60 plus parts and possibly additional labour. The suggested service centres were also quite a distance of at least an hour return trip and two trips would be required. If the unit was able to be repaired any parts or extra labour was most likely going to make the repair cost greater than the price of the new unit. With a new unit the client would also get a new set of ink cartridges, even if they were only partial cartridges, and a new unit would have a full warranty.

Brother could have easily provided a link to a page on the internet that would let the client know the most cost effective options for them. But instead the industry continues to trick people into taking old equipment in for repair, only to end up spending money on a quote that would be better put toward a new unit. In addition people end up wasting a considerable amount of time. This to me is just an industry rort designed to make money for basically doing nothing.

For known issues such as this Brother should provide on their website sufficient information so that their customers can make an informed decision. Service centres then further rip clients off because they know that by saying nothing and getting people to bring in their equipment for repair, they’ll get an easy $60 for doing next to nothing. As a business they shouldn’t give their knowledge away for free, but Brother as they seller of the equipment should provide that information on their site for free. This makes the entire industry look bad because it is just a rort that should not exist.

If you find yourself in this situation the approach I use, is to enter the model number and the error message and do a search on the internet. Because so many people buy the same devices, many people will have had a similar issue. If you’re lucky, they’ll have published what the problem was and perhaps even a cost. It may take a little time trying to work out the rubbish comments from the good comments, but often you’ll find the answer on the internet. In addition look at the costs. At $99 if you know you’re going to be up for $60 for someone to check the unit, plus there may be parts and/or additional labour, often it will be cheaper to simply buy a new unit.
